firefox and gmail

Ever since Firefox was upgraded to the latest version; when I click on a link in my gmail it opens up a new window with the search results for that link instead of just going to link as it has in the past.

How can I fix this problem?

What happens when you right-click on the link and choose Open Link in New Tab?
The same thing?

That works just fine, but I would prefer that I could simply left click on the link and it would go to it like it did before I updated to the latest version.
Uninstall all add-ons and try again. You can also try to perform a clean installation of Firefox. Uninstall Firefox, delete all residual entries from registry and install the latest version from official websites.

Is it possible to use another device (with latest Firefox and your Gmail account) to make sure that this behavior is/isn't set by default and in fact unchangeable?

I do not have another computer or device at home to access the internet, but I tried Chrome and it works just fine, so it must be a problem with firefox.
It might be a built-in behavior. Test it with another device.
There are three general types of behavior.

1) Open link in a new window.

2) Open link in a new tab.

3) Open link inside App, so below or side-by-side.

Update your question with which behavior use to occur, which is broken now.

when I right click I go to open in new window.  I don't like tabs.
What version of Windows are you using?
