Db2 DB Disk backups are running slow , CPU and Memory are normal -- need advice on AIX machine

Hi all

My Db2 DB (Disk type-Non TSM) backups are running slow.

I could see Memory is 60 percnt used and CPU is 50 % idle

I have seen disk utilization with topas and iostat but could make any concrete judgement that Disk utilization is slow.

But i have strong suspect-ion that there may be some problem with disk utilization.

It is a AIX machine.

Need some advice here

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi!

Issue this command
db2 get db cfg for yourdb | grep UTIL_HEAP_SZ

if this size is lower than 400000 (1,6 GB) i recoomend you set it to 400000 using
db2 udpate db cfg for yourdb using UTIL_HEAP_SZ 400000

As backup, restore, redistribute, compression dictionary creatiopn and online index reorg uses this util-heap it is recommended to increase this to a high value to speed those utilities. See here for more info.
I would also recommend to split the data into multiple tablespaces and not having all tables in the same tablespace. This will speed up backup/recovery as DB2 can then use multiple threads and parallelism in the process.
Also use compress in the backup command to compress the backup ( it can speed the backup process)

Post the backup command that you use and is slow.

Hi!

To move tables to new/other tablespaces use ADMIN_MOVE_TABLE utility.
