I'd go PS/2 as well, it does have a USB port though so a USB mouse would be a possibility, Win98 supports three-button and scroll versions.
A wireless remote USB adapter (with Win98 drivers) is also an option (but more difficult to source).
But you have a trackpoint on the keyboard  which will give you mouse functions. it that not functioning or are you after a "real mouse"?

you need a ps/2 mouse or an adapter for usb to  ps/2

Windows 98 has limits on USB, but a very standard wired USB Microsoft Mouse should work. These are time-tested mice that work well.

As John noted, W98 support for USB was spotty and it depended on which version of W98 you had.  An early USB mouse should work, but I would feel more confident with a serial mouse ... if you can find one these days; you'd probably have to look on fleabay.
