Exchange-VMware-Hyper-v supported disks

This article claims that Exchange 2016 only support hyper-v dynamic disks.

VMware vSphere does not have Dynamic disks. As the lab in the article is being built on ESXi, I think the author is just stating

We will be using fixed disks. Dynamically expanding disks are only supported in the VHDX format (Hyper-V).

because there is no such function in ESXi. I don't think it's meant to be interpreted as Exchange 2016 only supports dynamic disks, and therefore Hyper-V.

Microsoft supports Exchange 2016 in production on hardware virtualization software only when all the following conditions are true:

Any third-party hypervisor that has been validated under the Windows Server Virtualization Validation Program.


Exchange is an application which installs on Windows Server 2012 R2  and Windows Server 2016 both of which are supported by VMware vSphere.

It's not really the same as Thin Provisioning.

If you google Thin Disks and Exchange, there is huge debate over this...

see here, the same question is asked, Answer by Microsoft MVP, but none of the links actually state Thin not supported! It comes done to performance and Thick Lazy and Thin disks, can possibly cause higher I/O for some workloads... I think that is what the assumption is...

Especially because Top SAN vendors supporting both VMware and Hyper-V only support THIN on NFS.

If you are deploying a Production System, use Thick Eager Zeroed disks.

There have been arguments for years between Microsoft and Top SAN Vendors about this, as Microsoft does not support NAS for Exchange! (which is NFS and Thin by nature!)
