1TB disk shows as 32MB in Windows 7

I have a ST1000LM014-1EJ164 1TB disk that previously was working fine but now shows up as only 32Mb.
This is a Seagate disk with the serial number W7708WRY.

I went to Seagates website and downloaded SeaTools that let me run SMART tests and other tests avaliable. All tests say that the disk is healthy, and that there is nothing wrong with it.

Anyone out there know how to fix this?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Run Windows Disk Cleanup,  it can fix this issue.

Run CCleaner free version:    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

or Run SFC /SCANNOW as Admin.
or CHKDSK /F

Can you post a screen shot of your Windows Disk Management with this disk?

How is the drive connected and what happened/changed between when it worked and now?

Be careful running Windows or other cleanup tools - we should diagnose first what has happened.

Run  CMD as admin

run diskpart
list disk

check disk number, if is for example disk 1

select disk 1
list partition

Double check if there is no hidden partition and you see what's left of it.

If you don't care about data from this disk use this commands

select disk 1   (double check disk number)
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
format fs=ntfs quick
assign

After that you should see whole empty 1TB disk in disk manager

Does the BIOS show 32 Mb or does Windows show 32 Mb?

Run diskpart
List disk
Select disk X (where X is the 1TB drive)
List partition

Potentially your partition table became corrup.

Device manager, storage make sure your main partition is not mistakenly now seen as raw versus ntfs.

This is what I got:

DISKPART> list disk

Disk ###  Status         Size     Free     Dyn  Gpt
  --------  -------------  -------  -------  ---  ---
  Disk 0    Online          111 GB      0 B
  Disk 1    Online           31 MB    31 MB

DISKPART> select disk 1
Disk 1 is now the selected disk.

DISKPART> list partition
There are no partitions on this disk to show.

DISKPART> clean
DiskPart succeeded in cleaning the disk.

DISKPART> create partition primary
DiskPart has encountered an error: The media is write protected.
See the System Event Log for more information.

The event viewer told me this:
VDS fails to write boot code on a disk during clean operation. Error code: 80070013@02070008

Is this a SSD drive or just a normal HDD?
0

noxcho: Normal hdd.

That information is available through info in the question:

Ramin: As of right now there is no volume label for the disk, so can't run chkdsk. CCleaner and  Disk Cleanup won't help me, they clean up disks (mainly system disks). This disk is as right now simply 32 mb of nothing (partition is deleted and can't recreate it). Running sfc /scannow, but it seems to scan the system partition.

/scannow = This option instructs sfc to scan all protected operating system files and repair as necessary.

That is not this problem.

If the BIOS is showing 32 Mb then the problem is probably with the disk.  Test the disk on another machine and see what the BIOS there thinks it is.

If you again get 32 Mb then look at this tool  http://hddguru.com/software/2007.07.20-HDD-Capacity-Restore-Tool/  Use with caution.

I don't know what happened. My son usually uses this computer to play games on it. Needless to say, there is no sensitive data to be lost. Only games that can be reinstalled.

Looks like the firmware of the drive got screwed. Try as suggested on another machine and if this does not help and you have still the drive under warranty contact the seller/vendor.

There is no volume label for the disk

Right click on unallocated area select New Simple Volume.  then follow the on screen options to format it and check what size it will show or offer.

Using SEATOOls, what is the capacity of the drive it reports?
it's a hybrid drive 8GB flash with the remaining on the drive.
something failed, not having seen such a situation.

Thanks for the participation so far. Note to participants; please read the comments in the thread. An answer to the question you are asking might already be given. It might be so simple as to hit ctrl+f an search the thread for the keyword you arelooking for.

Information from seatools looks lik this;
SeaTools
Tested the disk on another system now, and it shows as 32mb there too.
Seems like this disk is done.

Please read my comment "ID: 42390248 at 2017-12-03."

I can't even create a partition or activate it. For your information; when there was a partition there, there was an attempt made to format it. Did not change anything.

Check if this can help.
Try to remove the read only attribute of that Disk by this DISKPART command "ATTRIBUTE DISK CLEAR READONLY", make sure the disk is online.

if you are not able to change the attribute then that is a BAD Hard Disk.

nobusCommented:
we need more infopost a picture of how the bios shows your disk
then a screenshot of disk manager

and plse - don't say "you can find the info in the thread -  if you come back after 2 weeks or more....

The Seatools shows it - the drive is doomed. Don't loose your time and get a replacement one.

Nobus: it doesn't really matter when I come back. If you are asking for information that is in the thread, you are essentially asking me to repeat myself. Please read the comments of other users and the replies I give. Even if I appreciate the help, I do not take pleasure in repeating myself each time someone might feel like it.
