how can I configure Skype for audio video chat following installation?

Hello and Good Evening Everyone,

As an extension to a previously closed post, I am wondering how I can configure Skype following installation for the purpose of audio video chatting with friends and family.  My operating system is Windows 10 which is on my Acer laptop.

             Thank you

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi George,
I don't have Skype on any of my W10 machines and don't want to install it on them, but I'm pretty sure that the configuration of it will be the same on your W10 Acer laptop as it is on my W7 HP laptop, so I'll describe for you what I do on that. The method is quite simple — I click the Tools menu, then Options. It brings up a configuration dialog with a bunch of settings in the left panel, such as Audio, Video, etc. I suggest clicking each item in the list from top to bottom. Each time you click an item in the left panel, its settings appear in the right panel. They're pretty straightforward, but if there are any settings that you don't understand, let me know and I'll try to help. After changing the settings, remember to click the Save button at the bottom.

Btw, if you want to know how to answer Skype calls with a Bluetooth headset, my EE article should be helpful:
Answer Skype Calls with Bluetooth Headset

Also, the article shows the configuration panel that I mentioned above (although from an older version) and presents some AutoHotkey scripts that you may find useful. Regards, Joe

Hello and Good Morning Joe,

It is great hearing from you :-)   I am glad you are still around at the EE forum helping others.  Your insights and tips are always helpful and continue to be so.

With regards to Skype, I was able to download and install it correctly.  It appears that the default settings are working good enough to get me started.  As I become more comfortable with using Skype, I will perhaps have more advanced user related questions.  But, for now, I am not having any trouble with my entry level status into using this program.

Thanks again Joe for your excellent and well thought out reply.

                Take care my friend :-)

You're welcome, George, and thanks to you for the kind words — very nice to see!

I'm glad to hear that Skype is working well for you with the default settings, but one area that I suggest checking right away is the privacy options:

Tools
Options
Privacy settings

I don't know what the default settings are for the top three sections, but if any of them is "anyone", you may want to change that.

If you do have more questions as you move forward in your use of Skype, I'll always be happy to try to help. Regards, Joe
