What Storage/SAN solutions do you use for your enterprise level virtual environment (i.e. VMware)?

Hi, I am inquiring about what others are using, as well as, their experience and if they had to do it all over again would they choose the same solution, for their storage/SAN solutions in your virtual environment (enterprise level) (i.e. VMware)?

Recently, I purchased dual HPE StoreVirtual 3200 SAN devices and have had nothing but issue after issue with them and I am trying to find out what others are using in a similar environment.  In addition, I am looking for great track records of reliability, granular configurations, on-the-fly expandability, etc.

Someone has recommended nimblestorage and insight manager, but not familiar with it at this time whether it is a viable alternative to the StoreVirtual SV3200 device setup.

Thanks in advance.

I have had really good results using Nimble. Whether it or what you are using is suitable to the environment really depends on the workload.

we use pure (all flash) for our vmware environment; works nicely, no issues

If we were to do it all again, we would drop FC, NFS and iSCSI and implement vSAN, and our clients are now migrating to vSAN.

VMware vSAN - now in version 6.x, has come of age, and the issues have gone away. It supports all Flash now.

I have used IBM, Oracle, Synology, Lenovo, EMC HW Storage, and VMware's vSAN.

And my actual favourites  for ease of use, setup and functionality are EMC VNX and vSAN.

Cheapest option and quite capable: Synology.

vSAN can work out fairly cheap, but you have to do the sizing, as it's not always cheaper than a HW cabin.

We are currently using Nimble with great success.  We have used Lefthand years ago, then went to Equallogic, now on Nimble.  The infosight service not only provides insight to your storage performance but provides great insight to your vmware environment.  The vCenter plugin from the SAN allows the Nimble SAN to correlate storage performance from the Guest -> Host -> Network -> SAN.  With infosight we have found guests that were setup improperly and corrected them.  We did not have this with Equallogic and SAN HQ.

Another story with InfoSight during our Nimble demo was that I was setting up volume block sizes too large.  I ran my performance test and 24 hours later, InfoSight automatically opened a support ticket, emailed me information on what I did wrong, why it was wrong, and steps to correct.

With Infosight you not only gain an easy to use SAN, you gain a Vmware monitoring tool.
