I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You need to make Inventory first to show available tape for the drive.

Try to do Inventory then Catalog.
You should see all available folders to restore, if not do Import then

How long does the Catalog take, it's been running for an hour and a half?
Thanks

Oops, I didn’t realize that I had a message, now it asks me for tape Friday Set 2. I’m confused, what tape are these files on? How can they be on 2 tapes? And why is it asking me for another tape when I’m doing Catalog on a different tape?

It's normal behavior if your backup set is spanned across two or more tapes. BE needs to catalog all data from single backup set and for that needs all tapes that were used.

Claude Constantinescu - Catalog is a long process since BE must build indexes for all files and folders in Backup set in your database.
It's depend from how many files are on tape,
Sometimes catalog one tape is taking 1-2 hours but finally you'll get option to navigate through backup and restore every single item.

OK, so now I put Friday Set 2 in, but when I answer it still tells me to put Friday Set 2 in, do I need to Inventory and Catalog this one as well, but I can only run one job at a time!

Tom CieslikIT EngineerCommented:
Yes, you need to build index of whole backup set in you BE database to be able browse it in restore option.
If you original backup took 2 tapes you must Inventory and Catalog both tapes

It probably did, one tape is 1.4 TB and backup was 1.8 TB. If it's not too much to ask, can you please tell me how to do this in order to be able to restore this folder, like step by step?
Thanks

Click Restore on the right Top

Navigate to computer name you want to restore and select folder, then fallow wizard, probably you need to select Restore to Different Location in one of window in Wizard since you're restoring from different backup so you must specify where you want to restore.

Or

Navigate to Media
Go to appropriate Media Set or Imported media.
You must find media you've just imported to database

BE will allow you to see this media, so right click on it and select RESTORE DATA

Then you should see all backups made on this tape based on Catalog.
Select backup and navigate through

Select folder to restore, select destination in next window and Start restore

Tom Cieslik, I have version 2012, my screens are different than yours

Tom CieslikIT EngineerCommented:
Can you show your screen ?
I have BE 2010 and BE 2014 but not 2012

Claude ConstantinescuAuthor Commented:
Now it doesn't even let me do an inventory, it says no device available even though there is nothing running, but I do have a message to insert tape Friday Set 4 to which I respond with OK but it keeps coming up over and over again, frustrating!!!
Thanks

So you have BE12 and it looks like BE14 and you using robotic library

Cancel all jobs and put your tape in some slot, let say slot 1 and since your backup is on 2 tapes put tape 2 to slot 2
Run Inventory on whole robotic, to let BE know where is what tape,
Then do Import on Slot 1 and Import on slot 2
Aster that run catalog.

To save time it would be better if you can unload all other tapes so robotic library will have only 2 tapes.
