Windows update not working

Hello,  never had any issues with windows update on my win7 machine, but today when i run it i get a red X and it wont show anything like the update history etc, i tried using the ms win update troubleshooter (link below)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4027322/windows-update-troubleshooter

And selecting 'Background intelligent transfer service it shows up 'problems installing recent updates'

Any ideas on how i might get it back to working?

Below issues can be the cause such a problem:

•Bad Internet connection - Check with Windows Troubleshooter
•Microsoft's Servers are down - Wait for a few hours and retest
•You have a firewall installed - Disable Antivirus and firewall then Retest
•You're using a proxy server - Check if you are using a proxy server
•There is a problem with your network settings - Run the Network Troubleshooter

Note: Before making any serious changes to your system you should wait for a few days to see if the error goes away on its own.
