FTDI driver in Linux Mint 18

I have used the d2xx driver for FTDI devices in linux before without any trouble. I used to do this:
sudo rmmod ftdi_sio
sudo rmmod usbserial
and after that I could use the driver without any problems.
Now when I run
nps-OptiPlex-780 ~ $ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 101: ID 0403:6014 Future Technology Devices International, Ltd FT232H Single HS USB-UART/FIFO IC
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 002: ID 24ae:2000
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
So the device is present.
then I remove the ftdi_sio and usbserial to be able to connect, but FT_Open(0) fail to open the port.
Any ideas on how to solve this? I have tried searching everywhere, but all I find is what I already tried.
The FTDI driver i'm using now is 1.4.6, have tried 1.3.6 also with the same results.
Thank you for any idea or pointer.

Likely best to check the Future Technology Devices International website + ensure the driver version you're using will work with Mint V18.

Also open a ticket with Future Technology Devices International asking how to resolve this, at they problem know better than anyone else.
