What is Microsoft R Open

Installing SQL 2017 we were asked to "Accept" on "Microsoft R Open".  We looked it up some sort of open source, but What is it to us Microsoft product users?, also  Why click "Accept" it in this SQL install? and How can we take advantage of this "Microsoft R Open"?

I asked the same question at a recent MVP meetup. R is one of the most used statistical languages that is taught in university. The additions of R, Polybase and Python  give the DBA's more tools to manipulate large data sets and not just limit them to MSSQL. R is also used a lot in machine learning

That question only appears if you choose to install R Services during the SQL Server installation. Did you do that?

Great info!

Yes Vitor, we “Accept” on both R and Python (or other “P” options)... was that optional?  Would it affect how SQL works if installed?

That is because you selected to install them.. If you don't want them then don't select them. They make no difference on how sql works just gives thd DBA's more options on coding queries.

As David said, choose those features only if you going to use them. They don't affect the SQL Server engine.
