Exchange 2010 email retention policy - question regarding deleting items older than X days

Hi all,

I am currently looking at introducing an email retention policy on our users 'Deleted Items' folder.  I will probably configure a policy to "Delete and Allow recovery" on items in this folder which are older than 6 months.

My question is.....

What happens when a user deletes an item from their 'Inbox' that is 7 months old?  Does it:

A.)  Get deleted from the 'Deleted Items' immediately (or at least when the retention policy runs as per its schedule).

or

B.)  Sit in the 'Deleted Items' folder for another 6 months and is then deleted.

I am presuming the answer is A.), but just wanted absolute confirmation.

Thanks

As far as I am aware, the timer starts once the item lands in the deleted items folder.  Therefore I think B is the correct answer

Really?  I am surprised by this as the documentation that I have read seemed to suggest to me that was the age of the email, not how long it has existed in the folder.

I would appreciate some other comments regarding this.

if item is already tagged by any deletion retention policy, after manually deleting that item old policy stamp will take effect and item deletion date (start) will be ignored

if item is not tagged by any policy during deletion, post manual deletion, as soon as item entered in deleted items folder, that date will be considered as start date

Thanks for the reply and the link.

I can confirm that I wont be creating any retention policy tags on any folders other than the 'Deleted Items'.  From the information provided then I would expect the item to be deleted 6 months AFTER the item arrived after in the 'Deleted Items' folder.

Can you please confirm this is correct?

This also leads me on to another question...  What will happen with the emails that already exist in the deleted items folder when I assign the retention policy to this folder?  Will they automatically be tagged with  6 month policy?  Or does this only happen at the moment they are first moved to the Deleted Items folder?

your understanding is correct
email item in deleted item container should get tagged once you applied your policy provided that they are not already tagged by other policy
