I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I predict governments will tax it.  There will be a few widely publicized cases tried in U.S. Tax Court where the IRS rules supreme, and a few dozen people will go to jail.  All other governments will follow suit.  Crypto holders will rue the day they invested in cryptocurrencies.

Sorry, but that's ridiculous in my opinion.  No one who follows the laws will rue the day they invested in cryptocurrencies.  Even if it's taxed at 50%, the investment *IF* it continues progressing as it has will still make a LOT of money for those who invest in it.  It's already legal in many places, including China.  While there are a few governments that ban it, others are embracing it.

Yes, if you use the currencies as for criminal purposes or think of them as ways to escape taxes, etc, it could be a huge problem for you... but if you treat them as property, report them, including the capital gains, where's the risk?

Given their meteoric rise I'm investing... mind you, ONLY money I'm not afraid to lose completely... because there are many things that COULD go wrong, but the outright ruling that they are illegal in the United States is not something I give ANY credence to.

Just finished listening to Mr. Brill from Kroll expound on this.  He likened bitcoin to Art, in that the value of a piece of art or a bitcoin is whatever the highest bidder will pay.  So although it may be worth $20,000 when you begin reading this, it may be worth $5,000 by the time you finish.  It is an investment one should make, like Lee said, with the understanding you may lose everything you invest.  On the other hand, you may make a bundle.
