MDF and IDF Question

Hi there,

I'd just like a brief simple explanation as to why IDF may be needed along with MDF.
Would it simply be because instead of flooding the MDF with networks you can transfer something like voice hosts to the IDF to either free slots or reduce the load on the MDF? If this is incorrect please correct me.

Thank you.

Main point is to reduce traffic having to pass too many devices unnecessarily. You want to cut traffic as early as possible.
E.g. if you have departments not having to communicate a lot with each other, each can be handled by an IDF.

Usually it's because of distances and costs. Ethernet can only run 300 feet or so before the signal degrades and is eventually lost. So you use IDFs to reduce the distance of these cable runs. It's also less expensive to install the cables if the the distances are sorter. Also if you have to do something like connect more than 1 building and need to run cables underground it's much better to only run 1 cable rather than every wall jack.
