Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

First, did you restart the computer and try again.

Second, move the Outlook PST file out of its folder into a safe backup location.

Now, restart, open Control Panel, Mail and delete the Outlook Profile (you need to know your account credentials).

Open Outlook, make your same account and then use Outlook File Open and import the PST file (not open it).

Now see if Outlook opens the file properly

Now (second post), if the PST file will not import because of errors, find SCANPST.EXE in your Outlook Profile Folder and try repairing a COPY of the safely backed up PST file.  Do not work directly on the backed up PST file.

Try to run outlook in safe mode

In Run/search field type   outlook.exe /safe
If outlook will load file it mean that you have some add-on in outlook that blocking file from loading.
Go to file / option / Add-ins and on the bottom of the screen go to Manage section, click Go and disable all add-ins
Restart outlook. If will start you can go back and enable one by one to investigate add-in cousin problem.

Hi,

The following fixtures can be applied in order to fix the issues.

1.) Use Task Manager to close Outlook properly
Sometimes Outlook gets open in background by some other processes. You should check "Task manager" to navigate to all the running processes and close Outlook properly. Follow the steps as shown as below:

Right click on "Task Bar" at the bottom of your computer and Start "Task Manager".
Click on "Processes" >> then select "OUTLOOK.EXE" >> click on "End Process" button.

2.) Uncheck all unwanted Add-Ins

Start Outlook >> File >> click on Options >> click on Add-Ins.

Deselect all the available Add-Ins that are checked and click OK.

3.) Edit Registry key

4.) Locate Inbox Repair Tool to scan and repair Outlook data file

Understand how to locate and find SCANPST.EXE utility.. Apart from Inbox repair tool you can also prefer some reliable third party solution to recover emails from damaged PST file.
Hope it might solve your issues !!

This also happens due to the large size of PST file. I can suggest you repair your Outlook data file with ScanPST.exe. Below is the location of ScanPST.exe in Outlook 2003.

32-bit Windows
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\<locale ID>
64-bit Windows
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\<locale ID>

Dear Author,

You are not able to fix open Outlook 2003 on Windows XP OS.
The Possible Reason for such issues are:
  1. Outlook not shutdown Properly
  2. Outlook PST file gets damaged
  3. External Application or Add-ons restricts usage of Outlook

Then in such case, you need to open Outlook in safe mode and check whether Outlook works or not. Otherwise, PST file gets damaged and should need to repair it using inbox repair tool or scanpst.exe. In Outlook 2003 it is located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE and locate the SCANPST.EXE file. If Outlook PST file fails to repair with inbox repair tool then in such case you will require third party software such as Revove Outlook PST Repair Tool to repair and recover data from corrupt Outlook PST file.
