Coding for Kids

We have an 11 year old that is very creative and loves doing things on the computer. At a book fair earlier in the year, he chose to get a book on building websites and really enjoyed it. I'm toying with the idea of getting him a coding program for Christmas and wondered if anyone had suggestions for that age. He likes video games as well so I really think he'd like one that allows him to build and play his own game, if that helps.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I highly recommend using Scratch for that age.  There is a huge community and you can look at existing projects to see how they were created.  The code is done visually using drag and drop tools, but you can look at what the equivalent code would be.  It's completely free from MIT:

Kudo is awesome and follows the same principals of Scratch. If you go with Scratch, you can buy a Raspberry with Raspbian that included Scratch (even with a laptop case)
