Using multiple wifi extenders


I have a wifi network where the antenna is on one side of the building, and the whole other wing is too far and cannot reach it.

I have put in place 3 X TP Link RE350 devices which I am hoping to plug in at 33%, 66% and 99% points along the route to the other side of the building.

I am therefore hoping that I can join extender 1 to the main wifi network at 33% of the route, and then join extender 2 to extender one's network, and extender 3 to extender two's network.

However, it doesn't seem to be working.

Extender 1 is blue light indicating strong connection to the main antenna.

Extenders two and three show red lights which indicates " too far from the router".

I thought I could extend it each time I put in place an extender along the route?

Wifi extenders aren't great.  You should try to wire APs to your network if you have one.

For each extender you add you halve the available bandwidth at that AP, so at the last AP you'd have (at a theoretical maximum), 12-13% of the bandwidth you had at the first AP.

As well as that, it may not be that simple.  If your building is 200ft long and you do as you propose, the APs might not see eachother with enough signal to repeat from the other APs.  Generally you'd want to locate APs no more than around 10-15m apart if they have 2-3dBi omnidirectional antennas attached, regardless of the output power.

You might be able to locate the APs at 30%, 60% and 90% of the way from the main AP and see better results, depending on the size of the building.  You don't particularly need an AP at the edge of the building if it has omnidirectional antennas as it will propagate in all directions from the AP, so could cover 15-20ft easily in open space.

Craig's correct. Stringing together extenders/repeaters can be tricky, as with multiple hops, many things can interfere with signal strength.

Another option is to use Powerline Adapters, which route Ethernet over VAC/power lines. This tends to work much better for long distance connections.

If this option interests you, I can lookup the ones I use which reach nearly 1G.

Thanks guys. I can get these wired connections, two out of the three anyway, once I connect it by cable, I'm not supposed to scan for wireless networks but rather get the details of the LAN in somehow and broadcast it with the same SID? Is it straightforward to do on these models do you think?
