O365: Reassign User License

Hello.

We're new to O365, and have a question regarding user licenses.

If we assign a license to a user and then remove that license (toggle off), will that license be available to re-use with another user?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Oh, that's great. No need to delete the original user first or anything like that?

You have to manage users with your account at www.office.com/myaccount.

You mean that's where the license is removed and added to another user, right?

Any other considerations?

Keep in mind that once you do leave the user account without a licence, you are going to lose the e-mails eventually. Always export user mailbox before you assign the licence to another user. If you need a quick response and you do not have a time for export you can always take a trial licence adding another Office 365 product, and you will buy an extra month for exporting the mailbox.

Yes, like Bocevski stated you could lose emails after removing a license.  However, you can do a couple of things to prevent data loss by 1) Convert user mailbox to a shared mailbox (shared mailboxes do not require a license); or 2) Put the mailbox on in-place hold and then remove the license.

Additionally, there are a few ways to manage licenses in Office 365.  Take a look at these articles...

A user didn't come back with comments. I assume the problem is solved.
