I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Blockchain is a ledger of events that is open to all members. Coins (bitcoins) are pieces of the ledger that someone owns . Walrus Magazine article January 2018 edition.

Summary: much hype, some criminals involved, lots of people lose money.

Me: there are safer equity investments

Only to the extent that you can afford to lose all the money you invest in it.  If you can't afford to lose everything, don't invest anything.

Think back 18 years and remember the dot-com bubble at the stage when everybody and their dog was in the stock market no matter what price or safety level.  That's where Bitcoin is today - a pure speculation.  I suspect we are now seeing another dot-com, another Tulip Mania (q.v.) before a "strong correction."

As John says, there are safer investments.  (Not many that will keep you ahead of inflation, but a few.)

Dr. Klahn is right on.

Investing in any securities, including BitCoin, good rule... Only invest what you can loose... so avoid dipping into your grocery money + house payment for investment dollars.

You have opened another question on investing.

I invest in solid equities and financial instruments.  Bitcoins are gambling, pure and simple.

You should close this question (since you have opened another one).
