Word - characters joined-up mystery 'fi'

I'm trying to write some VBA code to run against a Word document. It is crashing at some points and I see that it's because it has (in some places) 'f' and 'i' joined up. So it's a single character 'fi'. I also see 'fl'.

I've never seen this before. What is it? How may they have come into the document? (I didn't create the doc) eg. what did the user for these odd characters to get here?

(not tested but I suppose they can be removed with Find-Replace)

Thanks for any insight.

Can you upload the document so that we can see the character properly?

Ah, sorry I forgot to upload it! See here.

BTW, I could replace these odd characters with Find/Replace, but still would like to know why it occurs. I found it because I could write the paragraph into a text file. Always crashed at that point.
