Active Directory Domain Rename

I have a child domain in a 2012 R2 Forest that has an outdated name.  The forest has Exchange 2016/2010 in production but this particular child domain does NOT use Exchange in any capacity.  It is only for hosting VPN clients to forest resources.
There are several articles for renaming a domain but many mention the rename is not supported if any Exchange other than 2003 is deployed.
Is a domain rename possible in the situation?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If exchange is not deployed to that domain then a domain rename may be possible.  Other LOB apps dislike renames as well so whether it *is* possible will be dependent on your environment.

Best option, is to build new child domain, what you want and move the services or application to new domain. Renaming domain, 99% you might need to rebuild everything from scratch.
