IPhone 5 internal storage empty
When plugged into desktop, my iPhone 5's internal storage shows up as empty and is red in colour as well. I have tried clicking the show hidden icons in control panel still doesn't work.
Clear safari cash and reinstall facebook app if you have it installed

Can you screen shot the iTunes status bar at the bottom and make sure we can see the text? Thanks.

Are you trying to transfer photos and videos? Because that's just about all you can do (other than backing up your device, apps, iBooks, etc) when connecting to a desktop/laptop. To see how much internal memory has been used on your iPhone 5/6/7:
(on your iPhone) Go to Settings / General / Storage -- there should be a breakdown of apps, photos, etc., and how much each category takes up on your phone.
When syncing your photos to a desktop/laptop computer, you do need the current version of iTunes to do any of the above. iTunes will tell you when it is not up-to-date.

Goto the Device Manager in your computer and remove the unknown device first when you connect the iPhone via USB lightning cable.
Without connecting the iPhone via USB cable, restart computer, download and install the latest iTunes and unlock your iPhone and connect your iPhone via USB lightning cable and click Trust this computer when you see a prompt on the screen of your iPhone.
