Legacy maintanance

I find myself maintaining two rather large legacy programs that I wrote years ago under XP in VB6. Two sporting clubs depend on it. I’ve repeatedly advised them to find somebody fluent in modern computer languages to re-write these things. I’m 84 going on 85, and simply don’t have the ambition.

Question: I’ve been advised that the VB6 development suite will not run on Win 7, and newer OS’s. I’m curious. Why exactly is that the case?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I don't believe that's true. Please see this article, particularly the section on The Visual Basic 6.0 IDE. I know that VB6 apps will work (with some problems) on newer operating systems but I have no experience developing them on anything but XP.

I currently work (supporting)with legacy apps written under Vb6...and Windows 10...they work just fune..they even utilize ActiveX controls...they only issue is to register the correct Dlls

Most of this stuff works in Windows 7. Windows 10 is changing and upgrading every 6 months, so you would have to check and see if they continue to run - make changes if not.  There is no guarantee VB6 will continue to work as Windows 10 advances.

Given your first post, tell the clubs support ends June 30, 2018 and they must make new arrangements by then.

Thank you all. Hard to pick best reply. Reason why I asked:

Getting ready to ship this package, with updates, at start of new year. And my old XP machine died. The programs do run on Win7, though I had to have the installer register one OCX file. My concern was the VB6 development suite itself. Somebody told me it would not run on Win 7. Apparently, that is not the case.

Way back in the beginning, I spent the bucks to buy the entire set of VB6 CDs. I am thinking of getting another external hard drive and reinstalling the package there. Then trying it out on my Win7 machine.

Yes, I told these folks to get off the dime and seriously look into modernizing. Some day, all this old stuff will really die, as will I.
