How to get consistent results with autosum in MS excel

When I want to add a column of figures, sometimes autosum works and sometimes it doesn't, even though I can't see how I did anything differently. Sometimes there's no response when I click autosum. Sometimes I get hashtags (#####) but no numerical answer.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

When you see ##### in a cell that means, the column width is not enough to display the cell content. Increase the column width and that will resolve your issue.

In addition to the above, a space in a cell may cause auto sum to stop there. I use auto sum frequently but I check and change it if it is not going to work.

To John"s point, the cells that are part of the sum, must be formatted as number.
