Planning stp design

Working in environment with 34 switches mix of hp 5500 and 5120s over 3 locations

I suspect that the company who support our infrastructure just took the default priority for spanning tree design with switches

I intend to check each BID on each switch is there an argument for using default settings for stp would appreciate best practice on this and and also pointers on easiest way to correct it

I have login for each switch but also use HP IMC

The bridge priority on just about all the switches will probably be the default. The only place you need to change the priority is on the switch that you want to be the root (and the backup root).

Now if they built up a network of 34 switches and never defined the root bridge...  Well the good news is, anything you do will pretty much improve the situation. :-)

Unfortunately, it's hard to give you any significant advice (where to define the root bridge, whether you need to worry about port priorities or switching to MSTP) without knowing the topology.

Agree with Don.  The only thing I would add is to answer the smaller part of your question directly - the argument for using default bridge priorities is to never leave a network without at least some attention to defining priority, if nowhere else than on your root and secondary as Don points out above.  Do not be afraid to be a control freak.  Having code, regardless of vendor, do you the favor of designing any part of your control subset has the irritating habit of swinging back around to bite you when you are least prepared for it and generally at the moment to cast you in the worst light.
