Left click fly out menu not displaying in system tray or power button.

Hello Experts,

In Windows 10, when I left click on an icon the fly out menu doesn't display.  For example, if I left click the wireless icon, the list of available access points doesn't display or it displays for less than a second and then disappears.  The same occurs when left clicking the power button on the start menu.  I can see the choices of shut down and restart briefly, and then the fly-out disappears.

I am stuck at home and sick so I will try any suggestions quickly.

Any help would be appreciated.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It is recommended you perform a 'Clean Boot' to test if this is a software conflict.

Also it would be helpful to provide the following:

Did this problem randomly start occurring?
Laptop or desktop?
Wired or wireless mouse?
Newly installed software?
Windows 10 stock install or upgrade?

I've heard of people having issues with Dropbox and a few other applications. Either some software you're using is grabbing focus or you need to make a registry edit. Common issue dating back to XP if it is the latter. Try clean booting first as aforementioned but if that doesn't work you can follow the guide below.

Click start, type regedit.

Navigate to: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]

Change the following registry value: (If the entry is not there, right click the "Desktop" and create a new key)
You may find it is already on the "400" default, which would , unfortunately, lead to some other problem.

String Value: 'MenuShowDelay'
Default value: (should be) 'MenuShowDelay'='400', if not, change it. You can experiment down to 0,which gives a really fast response, but that is what you are trying to avoid.
You could even go higher, if it already shows 400. Try 600 and study the response.

Thanks for your time Christian.  I do have DropBox.  I'll try your registry solution first.  If that doesn't help I'll remove DropBox.

The registry solution didn't help but I can see how it will be helpful later.  I like the idea of being able to control how long those menus appear.  I removed DropBox but the issue still persists.  I just noticed now that Edge is working very poorly and is pretty much unusable.  I normally use Firefox so I never noted the Edge problem.  Edge just flashes after opening and typing in the address bar is slow to impossible.  I'm sure my issues are related.  I'll keep you posted.  Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for trying Christian Petri.  Your solution was helpful but didn't solve this specific problem.  I eventually gave up and reinstalled the operating system.  Things are working fine.  I appreciated the help.
