Windows Updates (WSUS) -- error 8024402c -- Windows Server 2012, domain vs workgroup ?

Any ideas on how can I get the below #1 to work

 1. do "check for windows updates" when
Windows Server 2012 R2 server is on "DOMAIN"
 2. get 8024402c ERROR
 3. change sever to "WORKGROUP", reboot
 4. do "check for windows updates" again
 5. works, using the same DNS as when it was on the "DOMAIN"
 6. change back to "DOMAIN", reboot
 7. do "check for windows updates" again
 8. fails again

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

check your group policy; make sure WSUS server is configured correctly
should have the FQDN for the server name followed by port
verify the correct port.  i've often see this missed
on 2012 and higher, default port is 8530; 8531 if using SSL
something like https://wsus.mydomain.local:8530

Look at the Group Policies on your domain for any GPOs that have settings that configure WSUS. If you do, follow Seth's recommendation to ensure the URL is set properly to connect to WSUS.

In WSUS console check if server is add to some computer group where updates are approved for install
Check you GPO is this server is selected as Update source with assigned (in process of installation) Port
Make sure this port is open on WSUS server for Domain Network
