How to factory reset my Defender DVR model 21065

I have a Defender 4 camera system. When we moved, I lost my password. I have contacted Defender and that was a dead end. I need to do a factory reset or find a way to reset the password. It is a Defender 4 camera system. DVR model: 21065  SN: 16 07 01227
Please help. We do supervised child visits and we can not schedule any due to this issue.

The manual states the following explicitly:

Loading default settings will restore all settings on your DVR to the default settings except for the date and time. The
DEFAULT USERNAME is admin and the DEFAULT PASSWORD is 123456

Have you tried the default accounts? Try either..
admin / password
admin / 123456

Since you're mentioning that the manufacturer can't help you, then we really wouldn't be able to either. As David cited, it would probably be less expensive for you at the end of the day to simply replace the DVR, Think of the lost revenue over the lost password versus the cost of replacing and setting up the DVR.

I checked the website David linked to, under the resources tab there was a download of the manual (attached here) on page 43 instructions are given on how to load default settings.
Click on the "Advanced" menu option from the Main Menu. You should see two tabs: "Maintain" & "Events", the option we want is under Maintain:

  1. Click LOAD DEFAULT, a screen will appear.
  2. Click the box for each function that will be restored to default parameters or click ALL to select them all. Click
  3. CLEAR to uncheck the boxes.
  4. Select APPLY to continue.
  5. A screen will appear asking "ALL SETTINGS WILL BE LOST. RETURN TO DEFAULT SETTINGS?".
  6. If you want to continue and restore the default settings, select OK, if not, select CANCEL.
  7. If you select OK, the DVR will take a few minutes to load the default settings.
  8. Once loaded, the DVR will reboot automatically and the factory default settings will be set.

Better quality DVRs are configured so that doing a full reset will not clear a password.  This is deliberate so that if a device is stolen it will be useless to the thief.

It is unfortunate that the manufacturer won't support their device.  As stated above you'll need to buy a replacement -- but next time buy Q-See instead.  Q-See will assist with a password reset if you are a registered user and can prove that you own the unit.

Fortunate for the questioner then.  But poor security in light of what is available elsewhere.
