Transferring existing apps to new iPhone 8

I want to transfer my apps from an existing iPhone 6 to a new iPhone 8. I basically want my phone to be setup identically to my old phone. Thank you.

Sync the old phone with iTunes and then sync the new phone.

I tried that and it brought up an older version of my old iPhone and installed that to my new phone, even though I did a sync of my old phone first.
Did that with my Girlfriend between an iPhone 5s and iPhone 8 when the 8 came out.  Worked fine.  As an alternative, if you have another computer available, install itunes there, sync the old phone, then the new.  (Apple drives me nuts).  Someone might have other ideas.

Redownload apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books from the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, and App Store

You can redownload your purchased songs, albums, movies, TV shows, apps, books, or audiobooks.
Rather than do a sync, do a backup and restore from the original device to the new device. This will copy.almost everything across including SMS messages.

I did this previously between an iPhone 4S and 5S
Apple does not do this anymore.  Why?  Basically, its simpler to have the apps just be redownloaded from the app store so there is less overhead.  So, what you can do is connect your iPhone to iTunes, make a backup then connect the new iPhone and restore your backup to the new iPhone.  You will have to go to the app store and redownload the apps you want.

Also, after you have done all you need on the new iPhone, then you should be clear to wipe the old phone as John describes here.

Great suggestions. I am doing another iCloud back-up of my old phone and will proceed to wipe the new phone and restore from last back up. The complicating factor in all of this is my old phone is having majoring screen freezing issues, thus the new phone. Thank you.
Thank you. Backing up from iCloud brought all of my apps back.
