Incomplete backup because of insufficient storage

Hi everyone, I have been trying to do backups on several volumes of from a Windows server 2012 but could not do Full backup due to the Window Server Backup saying "Insufficient storage available to create either the shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data". However, the destination has way more space to do Full vss backup. Destination is 2T and the full backup is 438Gb only.

What may be the problem and also possible solution for this issue?

Hi,

Just confirming - 2TB total disk size, or 2TB of free space?

If the former, how much free disk space does the destination drive have?

Windows server backup uses VSS to take a snapshot on the source then copies that to the destination. That error is most often a source volume has too little free space to properly snapshot the volume.

Has Powershell sent you back into the Stone Age?

If managing Active Directory using Windows Powershell® is making you feel like you stepped back in time, you are not alone.  For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why.

Hi Brandon,

In that case, either delete or move some 'stuff' from the source server and re-try the backup.

You might get away with just emptying the recycle bin if you are lucky :-)

Thank you Alan, will try and let you know.

Even if you get away with just emptying the recycle bin, I suggest you work on either reducing the other stuff on the server or increasing the disk space thereon.

right click the source drive, select "Configure Shadow Copies and tell it to put the snapshot on a different volume on the source server.
