I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

SharePoint lists ARE in SQL.  That's the backend database.

Can you explain what you want to do with the data?  It might be better to use SharePoint API to access the data from the SharePoint SQL database.

We want to link it to a database to house all data together in one database and use it in a website later this year. We will also include data from other sources in this database.

The proper / supported way to do this would be using SharePoint API (or perhaps some 3rd party tool that uses SharePoint API).

Honestly, I wouldn't "store" the data since it's already in a database.  I'd call it when you need it, using the API.  If that just isn't going to work for your requirements, then you could use something like SSIS to call a C# script that uses SharePoint CSOM on some schedule.  But that leaves a chance that your SharePoint list will different from your copy.
