SQL 2008 R2

We had a SQL admin to leave the company, and he created a SQL server for our hosted Help Desk system.

We are trying to get into the SQL server with the SA account, but no one knows the password.

Is there a way to reset the SA password, without having an account to access the SQL server?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Can you get in to the server with Windows Authentication?

Is there an app that uses the Database?  There may be a connection string in the configuration that contains the info you need to get in.

Use DAC. The dedicated administration connection. You need to shutdown the SQL Server process. Restart it in single user mode (switch -m). Then connect to the instance using the sqlcmd utility to reset your passwords or user accounts. Do this is local machine administrator.
