Outlook 2016 not updating searches since Jan 2

We have a few users who are using Outlook 2016. When they perform a search in email for a particular email, the results are not updating. Entries are only showing since Jan 2, yet they can view messages from today.

Anyone experience this issue with 2016?

Hi DLH,

What are the differences between the users that can search and the ones that can't? Are they on the same update version?

Typically issues with Outlook search can be from the following:

Is Outlook Marked for Indexing?

If your search shows no results then make sure the Outlook data file is actually enabled for indexing. It is important to have the Outlook Search Index working correctly, as it can send the entire email client into a spiral of malfunctions. To verify Outlook 2016 mailbox is setup for indexing, in Outlook go to:
File > Options > Search > click Indexing Options...> select Microsoft Outlook > Modify
Make sure there is a checkmark next to Outlook 2016.

In previous versions of Outlook, you could specify which mailbox or .PST/.OST files within Outlook to index, but in Outlook 2016 its become a binary decision: either you index Outlook completely or not at all.

When you check if it is marked for indexing, you should also try disabling & then re-enabling Outlook. To do so, follow these steps:
• Deselect/uncheck Outlook from Indexing
• Close Outlook
• Wait 5 minutes, check in the task manager that Outlook.exe is not in the processes tab
• Now open Outlook, go back to Indexing & select Outlook for indexing again

Possible PST Corruption

You shouldn't be using PSTs but if you are they could corrupted. Search in Windows Explorer for scanpst.exe. If you run this, it will repair any corrupted PST/OST files.

NOTE: you need to run scanpst.exe multiple times until there are no errors. Running it once will not do it.

Updates Causing Search Issues

There have been many known issues with search functionality related to updates recently, namely 16.0.8827.2062 so as a precaution since you will ultimately need to apply this update you can execute the workaround and see if it resolves your issue.
After updating Outlook or Office to version 16.0.8827.2062, searching using the All Mailboxes option shows no results.
Microsoft is actively working on a permanent fix but until then the only workaround is to enable Conversations view:
• In the Outlook Ribbon click the View tab.
• Click the check box for Show as Conversations.

So make this change and test.

Rebuild Indexing

If nothing else works or applies; rebuild your index. WARNING: search will not work while it is rebuilding. It can also take some time depending on number of Outlook items, file sizes, the number of files, the complexity of your folder structure, system computing power, etc. Here's how to rebuild:
• In Outlook go to File > Options > Search > Indexing Options... > Advanced
• Under Troubleshooting section click Rebuild.

Once the index has been rebuilt; restart your PC and run some Outlook searches. Let me know how it goes!

Hi,

Make sure the "Windows Search" service has started on that machines? if this service doesn't start then outlook search also doesn't work.

Windows search is started. They have rebuilt

The issue remaining is the search is not working for people that are not in cached exchange mode
There was no index on the machine because maybe user was not in cached exchange. Outlook wasn't listed in the Index when looking at File > Options > Search > click Indexing Options...> select Microsoft Outlook > Modify>Outlook 2016.
2 users have this issue. I just upgraded my machine to Office 2016. It is still running the index.
They can search but the results stop at Jan 2, 2018. Any items after that do not show.

If Outlook 2016 is in online mode, it will not use Windows search and rebuilding index will not work.

Outlook 2016 will use Exchange search index. Give more information of your Exchange server.

Are the users having the same search problem in OWA?

If yes, you need to rebuild the Exchange search index.
