How to use combination from IF and OR functions in a SharePoint calculated column?

Hi,

I have a SharePoint 2013 list.
In it I have "1" column type Choice with values a1, a2, a3, b1, b2, b3, c1, c2, c3.
I would like to make calculated column "2" where, when I choose a1 or a2 or a3 the value is "a", if a choose b1or b2 od b3, the value is "b "and if I choose c1 or c2 or c3 the value is "c".
I tried with formula:
=IF(OR([1]="a1",[1]="a2",[1]="a3"),"a","b") , but it is functioning only for 2 values - combinations of "a" and "b", "a" and "c", or "b" and "c" , not for all of them.
Is there a way to do this?
Can you help me with the correct syntax?

Thanks in advance
