CRM 2016 (on-premise) to Dynamics 365 Sales (on premise)

We are upgrading from CRM 2011 to CRM 2016 on a new set of VMs.  The plan is to do a migration upgrade from CRM 2011 to CRM 2013.  Once we are on the new VMs and CRM 2013 we will do in-place upgrades to CRM 2015 and CRM 2016.

My question is: what is the quickest and best way to upgrade in-place from CRM 2016 to Dynamics 365 for Sales?  I have read several online articles about going from CRM 2016 to Dynamics 365 but I am not sure what the best practice is and how to leverage the CRM 2016 server to do an in-place upgrade to Dynamics 365.

Do you mean Dynamics 365 on-premises?  If you do, then upgrading is no different from the other upgrades you are doing between versions.

So, I can do the same process in Dynamics 365 (on-premise) of exporting the SQL database backup, restore to the SQL database used for CRM 2016, delete the org in Dynamics 365 and then import using Deployment Manager into Dynamics 365

Let me know if there are any additional steps when upgrading to Dynamics 365 or send any links that are useful.

Thanks

I don't think you need to do any of that. When you get to CRM 2016 in your upgrade plan, you'll be at version 8.0. All you need to do next is to install Service Pack 2 which will change the version to 8.2 and also change the branding to Dynamics 365.
