User folders may not work because of Windows Security.

Make a folder on Computer 2 c:\QuickBooks files and use that folder. May sure C:\QuickBooks Files is permitted to Everyone. Then from Computer 1    NET USE X: \\Computer2\QuickBooks FIles  and authenticate.

Then QB on Computer 1 should see that folder as X:

Make sure Home Group is OFF.

Please take this up in the morning.

I do not completely understand.

1. If you have the other company file, close one and open the other. That is commonly done.

2. If you do not yet have the other company file, you can exports lists you need from the old company, make a new company and import the lists your want. Accounts, Customers, Vendors and so on.

here is what we have done and want to do.
this morning we installed quickbooks pos on computer 1 with the data on computer 1 which would make it the server
The manager decided he wanted to make computer 2 (in his office) the server.
So, we installed QB POS on computer 2
BUT - the manager copied the files to computer 2 and set QB POS to those files on computer 2
NOW - We are needing to tell QB POS on computer 2 to use the files on computer 1
How do we do this?
(not very good at explaining so I hope i explained it good enough)

1. Make one Computer the Main QB computer. Do not switch back and forth.

2. Be able to map a folder on Main Computer from computer 2.

https://www.experts-exchange.com/articles/16639/Folder-sharing-on-modern-machines.html

3. Open the file on Computer Main with QuickBooks and set to Multi User Mode.

4. Open QB on computer 2 open the file on Computer 1.

Ok i have successfully created a map network drive and set qbpos on computer 2 to multi user mode.
do I click on file and company operations? Or do I go somewhere else?
in other words, what steps to I take to change location and file name?

JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
So then make Computer 2 the main POS computer.

Open QB on Computer 1 and use the main center Window to Open Company File. Navigate to the file on Computer 2 and open.

It should open at that point.

If i go into quickbooks pro i can easly open up another company file by going to "file" > "open or restore a company " > "Open a company file" > and then I can browse to the file I want to open, whether it is on a network or not.  But I don't see that I can do that on QB POS

JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
Make sure Computer 1 can see the folder on Computer 2. Then Open Company File. That opens a standard Browse window. Look for the mapped folder and the file there.

JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
Open QB so no file is open.  There is an Icon to Open or Restore a Company file (and other things you can do. Click on Open or Restore company file, then Open and then see the dialog window above.

Ok I know how on that version of qp but it is different in QB POS.  If you look at the screen shots I sent, there is no option (that i can see to browse to the files like in premiere or qb pro desktop

JohnBusiness Consultant (Owner)Commented:
You have to use the same version of QB POS. In your screen shot. I see an option to Open Existing file. You need to adapt my instructions because I do not have POS.

i am going to send you several snapshots so you can see what i am talking about
As you can see, "JVG Enterprises is selected.  I want to re-direct qb pos to the same file on the other computer - not this one.
But I can't find a way to do this

Make sure you have mapped a folder on Computer 2.    NET USE X:  \\computer2\folder   You must do this.

Then looking at Capture 2 you can open an existing file and you should be able to see X: as well as local files.

I sent you a snapshot of the mapped nework drive that I created.  But it seems that qb pos still is not seeing it.
if i understand you right, I should be able to see it in capture 2?
if that is true, why isn't it seeing it?

Just an added comment - I still do not understand why I could't just go into file operations and switch to a different company file like i can in quickbooks pro.  either i am overlooking something or quickbooks POS needs to modify there program.

I found some information about using POS in Multi User mode. Some of it is File Sharing like my EE Article on File Sharing and some is about setting up QuickBooks.

You might look through this and see if there is something we overlooked.
