I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I agree with the above and on Windows 10 V1709, Windows Defender is excellent.

On Windows 8.1, Windows Defender is OK and when you also run Malwarebytes, you should be fine.

Remember that heavy infestations are best handled by backing up and reinstalling Windows.

You can also try Panda free Antivirus or pick one from the top left list.

1. Run Disk Cleanup.
2. You do not know where malware/virus is, so I'd enter Safe mode with minimum requirements and run all possible scans. I'd start with Malwarebytes and if this will not find anything I would continue with very effective and my favourite Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and RogueKiller (still in Safe Mode).
Yes, it will take some time but it's worth. These two tools (free) will dig all junk out.

Other free tools: Kaspersky TDSSKiller for removing rootkits, AdwCleaner for removing adware.

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) can be handy though it targets prevalent malware families only

SUPERAntiSpyware detects forms of malicious software like adware and spyware – and removes every traces. Can also control which types of file are scanned, whether SUPERAntiSpyware should follow shortcuts, and whether it should check inside ZIP archives http://www.superantispyware.com/

Emsisoft Emergency Kit picks up the presence of trojans, spyware, adware, worms, dialers, keyloggers and viruses, and can be run straight from a USB drive – perfect if you're unable to download or install software on the affected PC.  https://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/eek/
