What Would Be the Best Solution for Plant Floor Communication

We have a Switchvox PBX server and Digium Phones on the desktop.  I am interested to learn what other people are using when employees are out on the plant floor and internal communication needs to happen.  Currently, employee has to be paged and then they have to walk to a phone and dial the extension.  It would be nice if we could use a different solution to limit the amount of time it takes to answer a call or communicate with fellow employees on the plant floor.  Thoughts?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Are you talking about a handful of employees (e.g. supervisors/managers) that would regularly receive that kind of internal communication, or are you talking about trying to enable an easier kind of communication for ALL employees, even if they're not regularly recipients of pages?

For the employees being discussed, are there physical restrictions in the environment, e.g. solutions can't involve any sort of dangling wires, etc?

Does each employee have his/her own phone somewhere nearby? If so, the simplest solution I can think of is simply wireless headsets.

If not, you could consider softphone applications installed onto mobile devices (e.g. cellphones in their pockets) and let them have Bluetooth headsets. You could then either let the softphone register directly to the PBX so you can reach the employee directly by extension and it'd ring in their Bluetooth earpiece, or you could set up the PBX to forward their extension to their normal cell phone line (but that might not fly with all employees).

Also, if the communication is FREQUENT and needs to be instant, you could look into a push-to-talk solution (Nextel is dead, but there are alternatives).

I like the cell phone with blue tooth headset idea.  Thanks!  We will probably have to look into a cell booster for the plant; but that will probably work!
