upgrade from CRM 2016 ver 8.1 (on prem) to Dynamics 365 ver 8.2 (on prem)

Hello,

I am running CRM 2016 (ver 8.1) on prem. I want to apply the latest patch which should take me to ver. 8.2. I believe that this will also change CRM from CRM 2016 to Dynamics 365. This will also be on prem. Dynamics 365 online seems to be at version 9.xxx

I'm looking to verify and clarify the naming conventions I'm using. I'm also looking to learn about any gotchas in applying this "patch". I would think that I could take a backup and run the patch, expecting few if any troubles. My IT team wants to rebuild all of the associated servers, which seems like a giant waste of time and resources.

Any thoughts or experiences from the collective.

Thanks,

Todd

Thanks for the question, yes that service pack will change the branding to Dynamics 365 and the internal version becomes 8.2.

Dynamics 365 Online latest version is 9.0 but a version 9.0 update has not yet been released for on-premises.

Yes do take a backup before applying the patch and remember to also update Reporting Extensions, the Email Router (if you use it) and any language packs and the Outlook desktop client.

I've upgraded several clients and not had any issues.

Which associated servers does your IT team want to rebuild?  You might ask them why.

Outlook Desktop Client needs updated as well?   Interesting.....   The IT Team thinks that it is a "best practice" to do this. I've tried to convince them that this is a needless complication. They have no real rational justification that I can follow.
Yes, it is generally best to keep all the different Dynamics components patched to the same level. However, you don't need to do everything at exactly the same time.

If there is no rational justification to rebuilding a server, then don't let them!

The only time that I have rebuilt or set up a new server for Dynamics CRM/365 is when a new version of Dynamics required a later version of SQL or Windows.

Patching to 8.2 is not a new version (despite the rebranding) so there is no need to rebuild servers just because of the patch.
