Differences between the EC, SAM, & UEFI firmware updates for Microsoft Surfaces

I have downloaded the firmware updates for several Microsoft Surfaces and see that I have three sub folders for different types of firmware: EC, SAM, & UEFI.

What are the differences between these firmware versions?

Which firmware version should be loaded on a Microsoft Surface that is running Windows 10 Professional?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi Knowledgeable,

Can you post the exact model number(s) of the Microsoft Surface units you have?

Also, which update exactly did you download and where did you get it?

Cheers...

" drivers for Surface Pro Embedded Controller Firmware (Microsoft/FW/EC), Surface Pro System Aggregator Firmware (Microsoft/FW/SAM), and Surface Pro UEFI((Microsoft/FW/UEFI) . These are all in the October download package under the Microsoft/FW directory. For the Surface Pro System Aggregator Firmware I needed to Uninstall and delete the previous driver and then point to the October driver or it would show up with a "!"."

EC and SAM are device drivers whereas UEFI is the BIOS.

If your download is good and designed for your model of Surface Pro, they will be installed automatically. Download again is the only option as you might have a networking problem for downloading the firmware.
