Install ESXi under windows10

Hi  I have PC with windows10. I want to install ESXi  under the windows 10. All original configuration and files in the Windows10  need to remain there. so after the installation, ESXi is in the bottom layer. and the Windows 10 is above the ESXi. Anyone can give me some comment? Thank you

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Format your hard drive, install ESXi and then when done, install your Windows 10 machine as a Guest Machine. You will need to install Windows 10 fresh but it is the same PC so it should license fine.

Thanks for your reply. here are two questions:
1. can i not format hard drive and directly install ESXi without bothering Windows10?
2.before moving Windows10, can i get its license # from the windows10?

1. No. Format the drive and Windows 10 and all else is gone.
2. Since the PC is the same, the Windows 10 License is in the Microsoft Licensing server, so when you reinstall Windows 10 as a guest machine, it should license. You may have to call Microsoft Licensing support to activate.

ESXi is a bare metal hypervisor and production guest machines work efficiently that way.

I have Windows 10 Pro 64-bit on a fast NVM-e SSD drive and VMware Workstation Pro V14 installed. My guest machines all work very fast. For individual work, this is fine.

Actually Windows will need to be activated again as while in a virtual machine the hardware will have completely changed as far as the operating system is concerned

No. You need the Workstation product.

you mean, i need to buy another new license for Windows 10 installed above ESXi?

I would call Microsoft License Support to re-activate your existing license

You MAY have to if you have an OEM licensed copy of Windows otherwise it will just activate. Personal Opinion here: I detest OEM packages since they state a value of $100 (home) or $199 (Pro) but are not transferable from one machine to another. They live and die on the hardware they are first activated on.  note: I said a value of.  this is perceived value to the customer and nowhere near what they (the OEM's) pay Microsoft for the license ($15-$20)

Hi Andrew Hancock, can you answer the below questions?

1. I see the below from the link
On day 59/60, Apply your FREE license to continue using the product, or you will not be able to power on any virtual machines
https://www.experts-exchange.com/articles/28863/HOW-TO-Install-and-Configure-VMware-vSphere-Hypervisor-6-5-ESXi-6-5.html

My question is, on day before 59/60, for example, on day 50/51, is that Ok to apply Free  license to continue using the product?  how many time can i apply after first apply?

2. after the trial, and if i need to buy the product license, do i need to reinstall the ESXi or just input the purchased license to it without reinstalling ESXi?
Thank you

1. It comes down to if you want to evaluate ALL the features, if you are not bothered just apply the license on day 1. Yes you can apply on day 509, but you evaluation ends. You can only apply it once!

2. No need to re-install just Apply the License they send you when you purchase.

This was not mentioned in the post, but ALL hardware must be certified for use with ESXi, and sometimes standard computer motherboards from workstations are not compatible, so if you decide to install on bare metal you may have issues with storage or network controller in the motherboard.

So sometimes...it may not be as easy as.....

"Format your hard drive, install ESXi and then when done, install your Windows 10 machine as a Guest Machine. You will need to install Windows 10 fresh but it is the same PC so it should license fine."

If ESXi works on your computer, and it's not a server on the HCL, then you've been lucky!

Check the VMware Hardware Compatability Lists HCL here

The VMware Hardware Compatibility List is the detailed lists showing actual vendor devices that are either physically tested or are similar to the devices tested by VMware or VMware partners. Items on the list are tested with VMware products and are known to operate correctly.Devices which are not on the list may function, but will not be supported by VMware.
