Dear all,

I would like to seek for all experts for help.
My company has a fortigate 40C firewall, and recently it kept giving me problems, which WAN1 was intermitent down. And after several minutes, it auto connect back. I got checked in the log files, nothing that i can find from there. Is it due to heavy usage of internet that caused the WAN link was down?

May i know how can i troubleshoot for such kind of issue? Kindly please assist.

Thanks,
Kim

Hi Kim.

Many factors may cause the internet to fail, I'll list some of them:
1) Incorrect settings (For example, drop connection aftex X minutes of inactivity)
2) ISP dropping your connection
3) Faulty cable between the modem and your FireWall
4) Faulty modem or FireWall.

I'd try the following as a first step:
Have a look at your modem during normal operation (when everything is working) and remember which LEDs are on and what color are they, During a problem with your internet take another look at your modem - if the LEDs change, I'd speak with the ISP to figure out what's going on.

Hard to say for sure. Was the ISP having issues? And even the that that counts on there being a problem before it gets to your site. Could even be the router or modem on your side before it hits your firewall. There is even a possibility the ISP changes something that you didn't know about.

Contact your ISP first. If they are saying things are normal while your connection is still going up and down, restart the firewall and modem/router. Also be sure that the UPS things are connected to is working normally.

Dear all,

I have checked on the modem, and it is working fine. LED light is in yellow in color. ISP portion, i also got checked and they couldn't find any issue with the line. Thus, the mainly what i can think of is the firewall. Just to say if i bypass the firewall, what are the main risks that i will face?

And in fact, when the problems occurred, i did login to the main firewall router to check. Initial i suspected due to certain PC which taking lots of bandwidth of the internet that causing however, i have restricted so, but still happened again. So, really do not what should i do now.

Thanks,
Kim

Who is yhe ISP?

If you bypass your firewall, then you lose the protections of things like protection against DoS attacks. But also, any open ports are now directly exposed to the internet rather than hidden behind a firewall. But since that will temporary...

Try with only your computer connected straight to the modem. If it works, firewall related issue. If it doesn't the problem is likely with the modem or ISP.
