Skype for Business one side shows "presence unknown"

Hello all,

One of my customers is having an issue with Skype for Business.  Two companies are trying to communicate with each other.  We'll call them Comp_ A and Comp_B.

Comp_B has no issues at all seeing users in Comp_A.  They are always available.  When Comp_A tries to look at the contacts for Comp_B, they will show "presence unknown".  It will stay like that and Comp_A cannot chat to Comp_B UNTIL Comp_B sends a message to a user in Comp_A.   Then the user in Comp_B will show as online, active, away, etc....that is until the next day then they go back to showing as "Presence Unknown" again.

I did an NSLOOKUP and everything comes back looking fine.

I have also made sure the CNAME and SRV records are correct.  I verified this with their DNS provider.

This is the article I followed to make sure.  I compared the records in the "Solution" section.

This is a new setup for Comp_A and right now they are only communicating with Comp_B.  Comp_B is successfully communicating with many different companies and none of their customers are having this issue except from Comp_A.

Any ideas?  Thanks.

I'm sure this is an organizational setting in SfB. Both sides need to allow comms to external domains.

Thanks Craig...can you give me some steps that I would use to check this or where I would make those changes in SfB?  It sounds like you might be onto something.  I'm thinking the issue would be with my customer as the company they are connecting to doesn't have any issues with any of their other customers.

My customer is looking at the article I referenced above.  I don't have the logon creds so I couldn't try it myself.

Will post results.
Hi Scott, sorry I didn't see the notification that you'd updated this. Yes, that's more or less what I'm referring to.

Thanks.  I sent him the information. He's been busy but I'll follow up to see if that helped.

I'm in the process of syncing their AD and O365.
