I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

If the clients were PCs, I'd have you go to a command prompt and run IPConfig to confirm what they are using for DNS.  I'd then have you use nslookup and see what you get for a response.

There are similar commands for the Mac, but I don't know how to direct you there.

The fact that the problem computers can connect by IP address but not by name points at a DNS issue.  The fact that some clients work properly and others do not implies that there is some difference in the network settings between them.  Are you using static or dynamic IPs on the clients?

Check the Primary DNS Server IP on the client machines they should be pointing to your internal DNS Server and not the public IP.
If the clients are using DHCP then the DHCP scope should be configured to distribute the internal DNS IP

Both answers could be useful to the Author in resolving the problem.  If not, feedback from the Author about the results of what was requested would very likely lead to a resolution.
