DPM 2016 on Server 2016 and Modern Backup Storage

I have read that by design Modern Backup Storage (MBS) is enabled if you install DPM 2016 on Server 2016.

End User Recovery is not supported if using Modern Backup Storage.

Can I turn MBS off so End User Recovery will work, or what is the recommended method to get End user recovery to be available to my users in a DPM 2016/Server 2016 setup?

File Server end user recovery (EUR) not available when using Modern Backup Storage (MBS)
Description: If you use Modern Backup Storage (MBS) with DPM 2016, File Server end-user recovery is not available.

Workaround: None. File Server EUR is not supported when using MBS.

There is a explanation here https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/f4892812-9fbf-49fc-9b21-9b2ddf904726/dpm-2016-end-user-recovery-isnt-working-dpm-shares-report-the-device-is-not-ready?forum=dpmfilebackup

It is not possible to turn MBS off, but it is possible to instantiate storage volumes without MBS

Ok thanks, kind of confirms what I thought.

EUR recovery was a great tool, in a school with 1000s of deep nested user folders, and when restoring them for students who don't know when they last saw their work, the fact the view refreshes to the root folders when searching each recovery point  makes working in the DPM console very frustrating.

I think that Microsoft's view might be that they expect people to be using one drive or sharepoint online...
