cannot activate windows 7 home premium

Back in August of 2015 I re-installed windows 7 home premium for a customer.  a couple of days ago she brought the laptop back because the product key no longer was working,  Windows is saying that the product key is not Genuine.  I have tried at least 4 different keys and none of them work.  Is there something to do so that a product key will work?

Open the command prompt as administrator and type or copy paste  SLMGR -REARM (note that there is a space between dash and R).
Hit Enter.
Click on Ok to restart your pc.

If you cannot get a Key to work, then you must reinstall Windows again and before you do, ensure the Key is good.

You need to contact Microsoft's activation Centre:
In the USA I think that's Windows activation: (888) 571-2048. They'll talk you through the reactivation process.

Different countries hae different call numbers. Where are you?

I contacted the activation centre and gave them one of the keys that I attempted to use (it was one that was on another old laptop that had been discarded and they told me that key was not a genuine key - even though it was the original key that came with the laptop when it was purchased new)

-- Im going to try the suggestion from lvl 23

I am trying everything else before I re-install as this customer has programs on her laptop that would cost her money to replace.

Did the customer not keep their programs?  Bad move on their part.

If the Licensing center won't activate it, then it is not likely any other way will activate it.

Generally, laptop and proprietary PC activation keys are OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and are not transferrable to a different machine.

You may need to bite the bullet and buy a licence.

That is a decent idea, but hard because Microsoft will not sell these anymore. eBay may be one source however

I'm agree with the above. if that Product Key has been discarded by Microsoft then you cannot use it anymore and that command also will not help you.

Instead of that command try this:

slmgr.vbs /ipk [YOURKEY]

Ramin, your solution worked!  and the product key that Microsoft Activation center said was invalid is the one i tried!  I don't know what's up with them folks at the activation center but looks like to me you need to help them out a little.
