Windows crashes to the blue screen at each start up.

Windows 10 Home, version 1703, build 15063.877

I have tried to upgrade to 1709 and it keeps failing.

This is an asus Q552U notebook. It originally came with 1 TB SATA HD and was replaced with a 500gig SSD. It seems like that may be the culprit as start up always goes to the blue screen where I just click continue and it works.

My main issue is to be able to restart the computer normally and secondary to be able to upgrade windows 10 1709.

At first I thought it may be the nvidia driver and I have downloaded that from the Asus site and reinstalled with no change.

Below are the critical errors.

That's not the whole file.
What about the bluescreen message?

What I can say so far after these few lines: please retry with dynamic update unchecked
(setup command: setup.exe /auto upgrade /dynamicupdate disable)
That was the file when I opened it?

The blue screen sequence is

Prepare for automatic repair (black asus screen)
Then it goes to the blue, Choose your keyboard layout screen
Finally blue Choose an Option (Continue, Use a device, Troubleshoot, Turn off your PC)

I have tried troubleshoot and no help.  If I choose Continue, I get to my login screen.
von Axl - I think I have tried a clean boot but will read through that link in more detail
> Faulty HDD might cause this too.

They are SanDisk Ultra II SSD.  San disk has sent me 2 replacements because the first two crashed.  I have use Samsung SSD's in 6 other computers with no problem.  It may be the SanDisk drive.
Shortest error log I have ever seen. Ok, try the command i wrote down.

Hello There

If you enter Safe Mode... does it happen too?
If yes, bootrec repair commands might help you.
Have you reinstalled the OS recently?
check if there is a dmp file in window\minidumps, and attach it here

McKnife -  try the command i wrote down.

If I run that in an elevated command prompt I get, 'setup' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

If I run it using the run command I am brought to C:\Windows\System32\setup

I have not read through everything here yet and need to leave for a while. I will check back in the next couple of hours. Thank you!
Before you try another 1709 update, uninstall any antivirus / Internet security software and your Nvidia device driver and restart computer without update.
Hello There - Turn on fast startup unchecked , yes that was done
Scott, if your setup disk is x:, use
x:\setup.exe...
You forgot the drive letter.
When doing Win upgrade first upgrade Bios. And disable AV as already suggested...
did you test the san drives yet ?
> did you test the sn drives yet ?

I don't think I have tried all the suggestions yet. I will be back at this shortly.
ok - take your time
Here is where I am at:

  • Reinstalled nvidia.
  • Downloaded the latest firmware from Sandisk updated.
  • Untick "Turn on fast startup (recommended)".
  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
  • DISM.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

After all that, reboot and setupact.log and setuperr.log attached.
setupact.log

Tried turning off windows defender and Nvidia - no dice.
Did you try the syntax I provided? Still your errorlog shows a notice about dynamic upgrade being tried, that's why I ask. Your first tries with the syntax, as noted before, were missing the drive letter prior to setup.exe.
> Did you try the syntax I provided

Is there a way to get there manually?  The issue I have is there is no setup disc and the recovery was on a separate partition on the original drive. I can hook that old drive up via usb?  Otherwise, I'm not sure how to disable dynamicupdate.

Still have the original HD.

HGST 1TB 5400rpm model 5k10000-1000 and I have a USB dongle to access it.  (Very slow)

I think I originally used EaseUse to clone the hard drive.  I have gone through several SSD drives and on this one I may have done a clean install of windows 10.

For what it is worth, after the issues I have had with SanDisk, I was able to switch out a half dozen other computers to SSD's using a Samsung drive without issue.

If you did a "clean install", you should never have gotten the boot problem unless some other incompatible software or driver caused it.  Did that start right after you booted the SSD in the PC?
I am working on it. The problem is the location I am at through the weekend has very slow internet and it may take the better part of the day to finish downloading/installing.
> Did that start right after you booted the SSD in the PC

I don't remember. I have just been living with this because it has been very time consuming.  I don't mind trying on clean install on Monday.
sorry scott - i can't find it where you said you tested them -the link just reopens the whole Q
Scott, your logfile setuperr.3.log shows the dynamicupdate error again - did you forget to use the switch I gave you? setuperr.2.log does not show that.
Sorry nobus, it's the crazy way EE has url querystrings and bookmarks.  This is the post https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/29080228/Windows-crashes-to-the-blue-screen-at-each-start-up.html?anchorAnswerId=42446907#a42446907

McKnife, if I have to reset it each time, that would be the answer. I didn't reset it on that last try.
Scott - i see still no sign of diagnostics having been run - sorry
>  logfile setuperr.3.log shows the dynamicupdate error again

Going at it one more time.  I have it starting now. On the way out and will check back in 5 to 6 hours.

Then if same issue, trying Phil's.
setuperr4.log
setuperr4.log
I'd give up and reinstall.
One last try would be to uninstall each and any unnecessary software on your machine and then try again.
I am going for the clean install and see what happens.
Apparently that failed too.

At this point, I think it is time to order a Samsung HD and then #7 target shot to SanDisk

>  Did you delete the partitions on the Sandisk?

No, I just selected the do not save anything feature.  I have had issues from the beginning with SanDisk. The first two I had to replace within a month.  I will give it one more go though before breaking out the heavy artillery.
seems a possible hardware problem to me
best test ram AND disk
Thank you all for covering everything under the sun.

At some point there there is a trade off of time trying preserve files vs starting completely over and reinstalling everything and that is where I am now.
As it turns out, the model number is not compatible with 1709 per calls to MS and Asus.  I don't have time right now, but I do want to see if upgrading using the original hard drive will work.
