DPM 2016 - Insufficient storage Space, yet new disk

New install of DPM2016 UR4 on Server 2012R2

Adding a first, new hard drive to be used by DPM:

It adds and appears in the DPM storage pool OK, shows as healthy 100% unused.

But when I try and create a protection group I get the error
"there is insufficient disk space in the storage pool"

I cleaned (using diskpart) and left it as a blank online/initialised GPT disk before adding to DPM.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

thanks, it doesn't show up in explorer, see screens.
it's normal it does not show in explorer, since it has no drive letter;
assign one and it will show
best post screenshots -in doc format they're too small to read
you can use the snipping tool

I have managed to add the disk, I had to go into 'Modify' on the disk allocation and get it to 'calculate' (see attached). Is this normal, it allocated around 1GB to both replica and recovery volumes, seems small,  but it does seem to be growing as I add data to the test folder that's being backed up. is there a rule or calculator where I can set values on these 2 volume sizes?

just as an aside I think it is a shame they removed end user recovery in DPM / server 2016, that was very useful...
