Exchange 2016 Storage

We are thinking about moving transaction logs to all flash storage and leaving the DB files are on 7200 RPM SAS (BSAS). I think we would get better IO thru put with the logs on faster storage. does anyone have an opinion about this.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

if you have the space, why not also put databases on flash storage?
or at the least 10k/15k sas
logs on flash is fine
Travis MartinezStorage EngineerCommented:
Logs are current transactions that flush to the databases.  I would put your logs on flash as well as that's real time processing.
timgreen7077Exchange EngineerAuthor Commented:
currently we don't have the space for both so I though the transactions logs would be better on the flash and the DB on the spindles until we can put it all on flah.

I must admit I've never heard a client complain that their Exchange server is having performance issues because of a restriction of the log directory throughput/IOPs

We are migrating mailboxes from 2010 to 2016. all our 2016 exchange is on flash storage except for 1. We have a 6 node dag and I notice that when migrating mailboxes all the servers replay logs clear really really fast except for this one server and its the server on spindles. We don't have the capacity to put this server and logs and DB on all flash so we thought just moving the transaction logs to all flash may help.
timgreen7077Exchange EngineerAuthor Commented:
so with my limited options on this 1 mailbox server which option would be suggested. trans logs on flash or db on flash
Jeff GloverSr. Systems AdministratorCommented:
Transaction logs. Exchange is optimized so the DBs can be on JBOD type storage.
