Someone asked me "What are some system and network admin interview questions I should be prepared to answer?"  I have no idea.  What can I refer them to or suggest?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

In the job posting, there should have been a list of technologies that are used at the company and the competency expectations.  Be prepared to discuss or answer technical assessment questions regarding those.

You will also probably be asked, in moderate detail, to describe how you would set up a specific environment based on variables given during the interview.  You'll need to be able to, in reasonable depth, discuss your prior experience using different technologies and how you leveraged them to create a successful deployment or environment.  You may be asked to elaborate on times when you made errors and what you learned from them.

You will probably be asked to rate yourself (1-10 or whatever metric) on various aspects.  Think ahead of time of how you would rate yourself, keeping in mind the Dunning-Kruger effect.  You may also be asked how you continue your education as new technology emerges.

A network admin is probably going to need to know about:

  • Security (this is a big one)
  • Reliability / redundancy / uptime
  • Group policy
  • Fileshares
  • Hardware
  • Routers
  • Switches
  • Network security appliances
  • Wifi & meshing
  • How to support various devices on multiple OS
  • Remote access, VPN, and telecommuters

Personally I'd also ask questions related to ethics (ie: your boss asks you to let his devices do unsecure things on a secure network with client data. Do you let him? How do you deal with it?)

Depending on how advanced the networking requirements are, there could be details like bandwidth/throughput calculations, wiring & electrical needs, iptables, DNSSEC, QoS, ports & app blocking, etc. Networking and administration can be very broad categories.
